About this filter

Red Dead Redemption 2 is Rockstar Games' open-world western, and its English dialogue carries a lot of strong language, from mission conversations to the chatter of the people you meet around the world. This filter is for players who love the story and the world but would rather hear and read it with the swearing turned down: a streamer who wants far less bleeping and mute-editing, a parent playing with kids in the next room, or anyone who simply prefers it that way. It is an optional change you apply to your own copy of the game. It covers English only, and it is for Story Mode on Windows.

The filter covers both what you read and what you hear. On screen, 12,865 lines of English text (subtitles and other on-screen text) are censored, 13,681 words in all, and each flagged word becomes asterisks of the same length with no first-letter hint. In spoken dialogue, 38,811 voice clips are edited, with 40,184 short stretches silenced across 2,347 of the game's audio files. Only the flagged word goes quiet, and the rest of the line keeps its length and timing. Four checkboxes in the app let you choose what gets filtered (Strong language, Medium language, Mild language, and Religious Oaths), all on by default. In the text, 75 respectful religious references, such as blessings and prayers, are kept exactly as written.

The list of what to silence was prepared ahead of time: the game's spoken lines were transcribed with three speech-recognition models, matched against the same word list the text filter uses, and the result was tested in the game. When you run the app, it works offline and uses no AI. It reads your own game files without changing them, builds the filtered voice clips and text on your PC, and adds them to Lenny's Mod Loader as two mod folders. The game's archives and RDR2.exe are never modified, and the app's Remove filter button takes it all back out. The biggest gap in this version is cinematic cutscenes: their subtitles are censored, but their voices are not silenced yet. The story, the performances, the music, the gameplay, and your saves are left exactly as they were.

What Was Changed

  • On-screen text: 12,865 lines of English text (subtitles and other on-screen text) are censored, 13,681 words in all. Each flagged word becomes asterisks of the same length, with no first-letter hint, so punctuation and layout are unchanged.
  • Spoken dialogue: 38,811 voice clips are edited, with 40,184 short stretches silenced across 2,347 of the game's audio files. This covers mission dialogue and the chatter of the people you meet around the world. Only the flagged word goes quiet. The rest of the line plays normally and keeps its length and timing. The game keeps some lines in more than one place, and each copy counts separately here.
  • You choose what gets filtered. The app has four checkboxes, all ticked by default, and the counts above are with all four on: Strong language (the F-word and the harshest insults, including racial and anti-gay slurs), Medium language (the S-word, the B-word in both forms, and other common crude words), Mild language (the A-word and other mild words), and Religious Oaths (the D-word and religious oaths, meaning a holy name used as a curse or an exclamation).
  • Respectful religious references are kept. In the text, 75 of them are left exactly as written, such as blessings and prayers. The voice filter follows the same rules but leans toward silencing, so a few reverent spoken lines are muted as well.

What Was NOT Changed

This filter only reduces swearing. It does not change the game's age rating, and nothing else in the game changes: the story, missions, voice performances, music, and gameplay are left as Rockstar Games made them. The filter never edits the game's archives or RDR2.exe. It adds two folders inside the game's lml folder instead, and it never touches your saves. It is English only and has only been tested with the game's language set to English. If you play in another language, the censored English lines may show in place of your language's text for the lines this filter touches (not tested). It is for Story Mode only, so never take it or the mod loaders into Red Dead Online. Not filtered in this version: spoken dialogue in cinematic cutscenes and other scenes that use the game's multichannel streamed audio (their subtitles are censored, but the voices are not silenced yet), 67 voice clips stored in a different audio format, 455 voice clips in audio files whose names couldn't be identified, and any swear the speech scan didn't hear. By design, two words for a prostitute, one anatomical insult, and one dog's name that matches a slang word are left alone.
